Going the wrong way around

I've been trying to get a piece of software updated and working, but recently I figured out I'm doing it wrong.

I got an ancient install and I need it to be a bit more recent. Up until now, I assumed that the current install worked, and it simply needed some tweaking to get it updated. But I realize I should have figured out how the software works, and then do some troubledhooting on the old version. It will help me to figure out all of the nuances and give me a better way to attack the core issue with regards to the software, and make understanding the backups and restoral a lot more clearly. So, understand the latest version, then try to move more retro.
