So, Jeff Geerling wrote about the shortage, and it looks like my August forecast was a bit optimistic. While one EU retailer has been able to maintain stock for some time, nothing like that seems to have happened on this side of the pond. And according to Jeff through one of the Pi bigwigs, supply problems will persist into next year at least. They are producing 400k units a month, but no breakdown of what types or where they are heading. I think this means I have to explore alternative boards and re-purposing some existing deployments. One upside is that MicroSD card prices have been falling while capacities have been increasing, meaning I can keep whatever code and deployments in place while just re-using the boards. I'm going to take a peek through the video Jeff made on alternatives -- I did pick up a board ages ago, but it would be in the Pi 2 or 3 era. I'm actually amenible to buying a few more of these types of boards, to see how they are and what they can and can't do. Stay tuned, likely more to come here.
